Bringing in Business: Floyd County Still Hoping to Capitalize On Bartow Battery Plant

If you’re driving toward Cartersville you can’t miss the $5 billion SK On-Hyundai Motor Group electric vehicle battery plant going up.

The massive battery plant is a partnership between Hyundai Motor Group and SK On, and will rival the SK plant off I-85 in the Commerce area on the other side of the state.

The development site is east of the Floyd/Bartow county line off the north side of U.S. 411 near Bartow Centre. The development plan also lists the project will add $40 million a year in tax revenue.

That massive campus may end up covering 3.3 million square feet by its potential finish date in 2025.

A regional impact plan estimates 4,000 vehicle trips per day and a workforce projected at 3,500 people after production gets underway in a little over two years.

Floyd County is betting on that plant being a draw for additional investment and is working to make a site only eight miles away as attractive as possible.

The Rome-Floyd County Development Authority purchased a 202-acre property just off U.S. 411 near the Bartow County border in 2021 which was later rezoned Heavy Industrial.

The goal is and has been to get that site as close to project ready.

This past year voters approved a SPLOST this year containing $4.5 million for sewer expansion to Enterprise Corner off U.S. 411 for future economic development.

Having water and sewer infrastructure all the way out to the 200-acre Enterprise Corner site is important in order to attract companies looking for a place to set up shop.

“Part of our duty is to get that property ready by having water and sewer utilities there and ready to go,” Rome City Manager Sammy Rich said earlier. “Economic prospect activity had been high with the EV plant across the line in Bartow County. That’s going to continue to drive business along the 411 corridor.”
